It is no coincidence that a magnificent city at the foothill of emerald-green ranges of Tien Shan is called an orchard city. In spring, when southern outskirts are full of blossoming apples, apricot and cherry orchards, the city looks like a fairy tale. Gorgeous verdant attire and magnificent mountain view make Almaty unrivaled. Orchards, groves, parks, boulevards and flower beds cover a total area of more than 8,000 hectares in the city.

Almaty name stems from “apple” word. It is a birthplace of famous species of apple Almaty aport. Some sources claim that merchant settlement Almaty was located in this particular area, where Silk Road route used to run. Chingis Khan horde destroyed it in the thirteenth century. Verny town emerged in 1854 not far from ruins of the ancient town. The Soviet government has renamed the town in Alma Ata and it was a capital city of Kazakhstan between 1929 and 1997.

Almaty is located in the heart of Eurasia in southeastern part of the country at a height of 550-1,950 meters above sea level. Climate in the area varies from continental to subcontinental. Southern and northern edges of the city are located in different climatic zones. It is on the same parallel with the well-known cities of Gagry and Vladivostok. Almaty City with population of over 1.5 million people covers a total area of 300,000 square meters.

Almaty is a hub of science, culture and education in Kazakhstan. It hosts all largest educational institutions, renowned theaters and entertainment centers. Unique high-mountain Medeu ice-skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort are in vicinity of the city. It takes you only 10-15 minutes to reach these popular tourist destinations. Another world-famous destination is Khan Tengri camp in the Alpine zone, from where alpinists mount Khan Tengri peak, the highest in Kazakhstan (6,995 meters).

Almaty is a home of fetching ladies. Our marvelous beauties annually get into the final of the World Miss. Eventually, a contestant from Almaty will win a long-awaited diamond crown and bring it to the city of seven rivers.

Sightseeing. World-renowned Medeu ice-skating rink constructed in 1972 is 1,691.2 meters above sea level. The largest speed-skating rink in the world, it has been witness to the setting of over 120 world records in ice skating and ice hockey. The total ice surface of 10,500 square meters enables contests in ice-skating, hockey and figure-skating. The mountain valley was named after rich Medeu nomad who made a settlement in this picturesque area in the nineteenth century.

Medeu is gorgeous in all weathers. You can feast eyes on its glory from the top of a grand 842-step stairs.

Shymbulak ski resort is only 7 kilometers away from Medeu at 2,200-2,500 meters above sea level in vivid Zailiyskiy Alatau gorge. The average annual temperature is +20 С in summer and –7 С in winter. The length of ski season is from November to May. The downhill course stretches for 3,500 meters.

Almaty Hosts 2011 Winter Asian Games. Almaty and the Olympic Council of Asia signed the Host City Contract on March 4, 2006 in Kuwait enabling Almaty to host 2011 Asian Winter Games. The timeframe of the VII Asiad was set at January 30 – February 6, 2011.

Almaty Oblast covers an area somewhat less than the UK. During one day tourists can visit all existing landscape and climatic zones from sandy deserts to eternal glaciers and highest peaks. Unique flora and fauna inhabiting deserts and semi-deserts kindle interest of visitors and researchers. Charyn Canyon and relict aspen grove, ancient petroglyphs of Ili River and Tamgaly area, Big Almaty Lake and Kolsay Lakes, lofty mountains of Zailiyskiy Alatau, Dzungarian Alatau and Central Tien Shan strike tourists who come there to savor their beauty.

Average temperature in Almaty is –6 С in January, +24 С in July, and +17 С in September.

The southern capital has almost fifty hotels. 5-star Rakat Palas Hotel and the Regent Almaty, Ankara, 4-star Kazakhstan Hotel and Hotel Astana, 3-star Almaty Hotel are among the most reputed ones in the city.
